ESMA publishes latest edition of its newsletter

04/04/2023

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the EU’s financial markets regulator and supervisor, has today published its latest edition of its Spotlight on Markets Newsletter.

Your one-stop-shop in the world of EU financial markets focused in March on various important topics such as the Market Correction Mechanism (MCM) and our cooperation with ACER – the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators – as well as the launch of the first ESMA cartoon on investor protection.

The results of the Effects Assessment confirmed the findings of the preliminary data report that, to date, no measurable impact of the MCM can be identified. In addition, we signed an updated Memorandum of Understanding with ACER, which strengthens collaboration between the two institutions and incorporates new cooperation areas under the MCM Regulation and benchmarks related to the energy sector.

ESMA also launched its first cartoon linked to our investor protection mandate and the release of the guidance for supervision of copy trading services. Our mission is to better serve financial consumers’ needs and to reinforce their ability to make informed choices. This was the first of a series of visual representations, which will be used throughout the year to cover a range of topics relevant to our stakeholders.

In addition, we fined S&P €1.11 million for failures related to the premature release of credit ratings to the public and published the 2022 Corporate Reporting Enforcement and Regulatory Activities Report, providing an overview of activities carried out by ESMA and enforcers on financial and non-financial information and European Single Electronic Format reporting. See visuals here.

Last, we went out with guidance on product governance, guidance on fractional shares and new Q&As.
