In line with ESMA’s investor protection mandate, the performance and cost of investment products is a key element of ESMA’s risk monitoring and analysis activities. Our analytical work is motivated by the EU agenda on promoting effective and efficient financial markets, and its key objective of fostering the participation of retail investors in the EU capital markets.

In our annual flagship report on costs and performance of investment products, we investigate UCITS, Alternative Investment Funds sold to retail investors (retail AIFs) and Structured Retail Products (SRPs). We provide details on past performance and costs over a multi-year period in the EU as a whole and for individual Member States, and distinguishes different time horizons, asset classes, retail and institutional investors, actively and passively managed funds, and the impact of inflation. To facilitate comparison across product types, our annual reports are published alongside EIOPA’s annual reports on the cost and past performance of the main categories of retail investment, insurance and pension products. In addition, we provide in-depth Risk Analysis on relevant consumer protection related topics.
